Want Better Gas Mileage?

Monday, September 15th, 2008

There are some big ways and some small ways you can get better gas mileage with your vehicle.  Here are some relatively well known tips for improving the mileage in your current car.  None of them are earth shattering, but in combination, they will make a difference.

1. Drive slower. If you drive more slowly, you use less fuel. That’s a plain fact.

2. Remove excess weight from your car. Remember when we needed a couple 50 lb. bags of sand in our trunks to get traction in the winter?  No? That’s when all cars had rear wheel drive - we needed the extra weight.  Now we don’t. The lighter your car, the less gas you’ll use.

3. Keep your car tuned up and operating efficiently. All this takes is a new air filter, spark plugs and better gas mileage could be yours.

There are some major options to consider, too.

Buy a hybrid model.  You might have to get on a waiting list because these are hot. There is also some controversy over how green the production process really is. There is no controversy over the fantastic improvement in gas mileage that you experience owning one.

My relative owns a Toyota Prius. He is thrilled with it.  His new hobby is inventing ways to continue running on battery power as long as possible before kicking into gasoline mode. (I know, get a life!)

There is also the new hydrogen for gas option. This sure sprung up fast. There is presently a Hydrogen for Gas System that you can install - or have installed for you - on your car.  Promises of better gas mileage come with all the advertisements.

The whole hydrogen for gas thing is really controversial right now, though. Did I say really?  Believe it. There are some who believe the whole concept is just a scam. And of course, if there is a fresh idea that people get charged about, you can count on the scammers trying to capitalize on it. But if there’s something to it, we’ll know soon enough.
